Description
Alginate wound dressing is manufactured by processing natural elements found in seaweed to produce felt and rope dressings.
Functions
- High Absorbency—Alginate fibers form a gel upon contact with wound exudate, locking in moisture while maintaining a moist wound environment (ideal for healing).
- Hemostatic Properties – Calcium alginate can help control minor bleeding by promoting plate let activation.
- Biodegradable—The fibers break down naturally in the wound, eliminating the need for painful removal.
- Non-Adherent – The gel formation prevents sticking to the wound bed, reducing trauma during dressing changes.
- Promotes Autolytic Debridement – Helps soften and remove necrotic tissue by maintaining a moist environment.
Alginate wound dressing is indicated for the management of the following moderately to heavily exuding acute and chronic wounds:
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous leg ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Arterial ulcers
- Graft and donor sites
- Post-operative surgical wounds
- Superficial and partial thickness burns
